Your Right to Your Prescription
Your eye care professional has to give you a copy of your prescription — whether you ask for it or not. It’s the law. For glasses, they must give you a copy immediately after you get an eye exam that includes a refraction, and before they offer to sell you eyeglasses. For contact lenses, they have to give you a copy after your fitting is complete (which may require two visits).
To get your prescription, know that your eye care professional
•Can’t make you pay an extra fee
•Can’t say you have to buy eyeglasses or contact lenses
•Can’t tell you to sign a waiver or release
ITS THE LAW THAT YOUR EYE PRESCRIPTION MUST HE RELEASED TO YOU AND AN EYE DOCTOR CANNOT FORCE YOU TO BUY FROM HIM OR HER.
FORCING YOU TO SIGN A CONTRACT VIOLATES THIS LAW.
Here’s what to know:
You don’t have to buy glasses or contact lenses from your eye care professional. You have a right to go and find the style (for glasses) and price that work for you somewhere else, in person or online. Having a copy of your prescription lets you do that.
You have a right to get an additional copy of your contact lens prescription. If you need another copy of your prescription, or a business has your permission to get a copy, your eye care professional has 40 business hours to send it.

I went in for a yearly eye exam for contacts. Went in able to see just fine. Up close and far away. I left not being able to see up close. I was told my prescription changed. Ok but how do I go in seeing perfectly fine and leave with a prescription that now I can’t read up close. I felt like the doctor looked at my age and just figured I needed reading glasses. The exams are cheap for a reason
