This whole process has been so stressful for me and my 10y old son. On September 26 he woke up at 1 am in so much excruciating pain. I took him to an urgent care and ER. They told me it may be pink eye but didn’t test anything and sent us home with antibiotics. It didn’t help at all. I went to an optometrist a week later and they said it’s a swollen nerve in his eye but it’s out of their scopes of competence and can’t help with treatment and he needs a pediatric neuro ophthalmologist. They referred me to Dean McGee and my son was seen on October 31st. He said, “it’s a swollen nerve but we need to find the cause.” Sent him to get so many tests on his eye and told us to come back in two weeks for a follow up with no medication to help with the pain or swelling. My son began to lose his vision! We went back November 15th and they said they wanted to run MORE tests and said he needs an MRI. He got more tests and we were there from 11 am til 3:30 pm. After waiting about 30 minutes they said they have to send us to somewhere else to get an MRI. We went to get it and they said if my child couldn’t remain still for an hour in this machine they would cancel the test. He lasted about 45 minutes with no sedation, no music, no comfort before he began crying. We left there with no results and no medication to help with pain. They asked us to come back on November 22 for a follow up and to review results. We went back on November 22 and they said they wanted to do a dye test to see which nerves work and which nerves don’t. At this point my child is tired of ending poked every week but still in so much pain and suffering. They recommended over the counter Tylenol which DID NOTHING!! Then the pediatric neuro ophthalmologist said they wanted a second opinion and referred us to a neurologist that luckily was still in the building. She looked at his eyes and said she wanted lab work done. So we had to leave and get blood drawn from him. Again left with no results and no treatment. They said they weren’t sure if they wanted to do a biopsy on his eye or give him oral anti inflammatory medicine. At this point I’m thinking can we have ANYTHING for pain. At the least. We were told to come back on November 29th. Now we’re here every week I’m missing work and he’s missing school I’m a single mother and just want my child to stop suffering. When we got to this appointment to follow up with the neurologist they said he needs to get ANOTHER ULTRASOUND. So I asked why do we keep doing this and every time I get here we’re told he needs more test, we get no results the same day, and no help with the pain or inflammation. They have all the equipment and nice staff but the waiting rooms are soooooo packed for all these tests you have to be prepared to not work at all. This has been a nightmare for my child the past couple of months. But this is an eye institute and I never imagined it would be this chaotic and them to be so unsure on what to do for so long. I just want my son to feel better that’s it. I gave it a 2 star only because of the staff being so nice but we’re not here for just that.

In Jan. of 2022 my optomistrist told me the dry AMD in my right eye was starting to turn wet. She suggested I see a retinal specialist. I had three appointments with very professional specialists and they started the injections. Soon after my third injection a-family member Who is a medical professional suggested I go to Dean McGee. My first doctor was nice and had an impressive resume. He gave me no feedback whatsoever. After one year of injections I asked to be transferred to a doctor with better patient communications. When the appointment arrived I waited two hours. When I met the doctor he seemed perturbed and most of his replies were cryptic. He checked my eyes and told me to come back in six months which he later changed to three months. I had been getting injections every six weeks so obviously I was curious. No explanation was offered. I am very concerned about my sight, but have no idea about my future.

Well I would leave a detailed review if I could, but given the fact that I’ve been trying to contact them for 4 months with zero contact from anybody, I can’t. I’ve called over a dozen times and I’ve left 5 messages. I’ve been on hold for over a collective 45+ minutes at this point. Not even sure what to say. I’ve never had this much trouble contacting somebody over a referral. If somebody there reads this please listen to my messages and give me a call. Or answer the phone. Literally anything, I’m begging you. Update: I was finally able to get into the facility. Only after waking up with a blind spot in my vision, being taken to the ER, and have the ER Physician call them himself to get me in. Even after all of that, it still took them multiple days to see me. All that being said, the entire staff are amazing. They were super helpful, clearly cared for their patients, and were very articulate and insightful. If it weren’t for their absolutely horrible phone system, scheduling staff, and phone operators, it’d be an easy 5 stars. The institute itself is top notch, their phone operators are not. I’d recommend just doing all business you have with them in person. For now I will update it to a 3 stars instead of a 1.
