I’m so disappointed in the practice. I have been a patient of Dr. Levinson — and Dr. Becker while he was away at the Syracuse and Cazenovia locations. The Doctors here are exceptionally professional and knowledgeable. No complaints about them. However, the staff at both practices have been awful to deal with for the past 23 years.
The receptionists I’ve dealt with are routinely rude, short with you, and unhelpful on the phone or during visits. I recently interacted with Naomi from the Cazenovia office and she was reluctant to let me speak, explain my situation, or answer my questions.
I opened the conversation trying to express that I have had a change with my insurance and I am on Medicaid, but she quickly dismissed me to get to scheduling. When she finally asked about insurance after basically scheduling me, she informed me that they couldn’t serve me or sell contacts or anything out of pocket in a very rude and short manner. When asked why, she said they would get fined and that I basically shouldn’t have told her. She then recommended I try to call the Syracuse office, forgoe telling them about my insurance, and condescendingly wished me good luck. This seems just as illegal and even more shady.
Naomi wouldn’t even help me understand how the industry works, where I could go to get new contacts or glasses, or answer basic questions about insurance or procedures.
I work as a student audiologist and I am well aware of ethical practices and not bending the rules to accommodate patients. That being said, I’m not angry they couldn’t serve me, I’m upset with how she handled the situation.
Even when I had great insurance, the receptionist staff was always exceptionally rude. They never believed how good our insurance was and were always again, condescending, making us come in to prove our coverage when usually all they had to do was turn the page in our documents.
They are unprofessional, unethical, unhelpful in guiding patients on what to do, they don’t listen to us, and are highly dismissive.
I’m sad because the doctors are decent humans. Even the contacts specialist was dismissive when asked about rates for contacts out of pocket. I understand there are a lot of considerations that go into pricing, I handle hearing aid patients that ask the very same questions. There is a kind way to give a price range without being rude or insulting people.
I will no longer be going to this practice and I will be telling my family and everyone I know to avoid them as well.
If you are looking for a better experience and professional care I recommend Original Eyewear in Syracuse. They took time with me on the phone, gave me turns to speak, taught me about VSP, how to enroll, and different options to consider even though they don’t get paid for it.
I can’t express how disappointed I am in Eyecare of CNY after all these years, this has to be the last straw.

Saw Dr. Joe today for the 1st time. Was a great experience all around. Reception staff was very friendly and welcoming, eye assistant was very helpful and explained everything to me when I had questions, and Dr. Joe was great. He was extremely personable, addressed all of my concerns, and helped guide me to what would work best for me. Thank You!

Staff had issues locating my appointment, although they had booked me the prior week ago. Staff was kind enough to honor my appointment. On top of that Dr. joe was very kind and nice and walked me through everything I need to know about my eyes. The person filing insurance and charging cards was extremely helpful as well with such a great attitudes. Overall, the environment is welcoming and makes you feel taken cared of. I would definitely come back!
