SHORT VERSION: They committed fraud with my insurance company and threatened me. Their actions violated the Hippocratic oath in that they used my insurance benefit for the year without providing me with correct contacts or a prescription. LONG VERSION: I have been going to this doctor for 4 years now, and each year he claims my insurance will not cover more and more of the bill. I went in to see him in June of 2023, and another doctor did my eye exam. I asked Benjamin Arthur to order a brand of contacts that I had loved in the past, and to his credit - he agreed to open the account with the manufacturer. It took SIX WEEKS for them to get the trial pair in. When I came in to fit the trial pair (a feat that would take 15 minutes at any other doctors office) - it took me AN HOUR to even see the doctor, and almost and hour and 45 minutes total for me to get the trial pair and leave. Before I left, his front desk staff told me that despite the contacts being medically necessary, AND previous years they had been paid for in full, that this time - I had to pay for the contact lens fitting AND six months of my contacts OUT OF POCKET. I told them that didn't sound correct and even called my insurance company while I was standing in front of them. The rep with VSP explained to the staff that I only owe my copay, and that the contact lens fitting, the contacts, and the exam would all be covered by my insurance. After getting off the phone the doctor intervened and told me that I had to pay for the fitting out of pocket due to the diagnostic code - and that my insurance benefit had changed and didn't cover me due to the complexity of my prescription. He charged me $170 and I left. Upon using the trial pair - my prescription was NOT correct, and I asked him to make adjustments. I made an appointment to come in to fix this (now more than 2 months after my initial exam) and DESPITE my being first that day (10am when they opened) - I sat for 45 minutes waiting for the doctor to arrive. I told him the trial pair was incorrect and he refused multiple times to change the prescription until I was adamant that I couldn't see correctly. He reluctantly adjusted the prescription and again told me that 6 months of my year of contacts would not be covered by my insurance because the COST TO HIM of shipping the trial pairs was cutting into his profit. He actually told me this in front of other customers. Again - it took me almost 2 hours to get in and out. After a week had passed, and the new trial pair was fuzzy AGAIN; I called to tell him I need to go to another optometrist. That I had run out of my previous years supply of contacts waiting for him to do his job correctly and that I couldnt go through life wearing a trial pair that didn't work (if they tore - I would be blind). He told me he could not release my prescription until I paid for the trial pair. I informed him this was extortion and that I cannot have him continue to make mistakes and then charge me for 6 months of contacts out of pocket for a prescription that HE INSISTED was correct despite me telling him that it was fuzzy. He threatened me, yelled at me on the phone, wouldn't listen to anything I said while continually talking over me, and then hung up the phone telling me he was going to turn me over to the creditors for lack of payment. I filed a grievance with my insurance company immediately after he called and threatened me. This was now 3 months from my initial exam and I still didn't have any contacts or a prescription. I am also filing a formal complaint with the medical board of NY alleging malpractice, fraud, and unprofessional and hostile behavior and threats. On 9/19/23 - my insurance company called me to tell me he filed with them for payment for the prescription DESPITE HIM REFUSING to give me the prescription and never getting it correct. Luckily my insurance company waved the cost of another exam with another doctor due to this doctors behavior, unprofessionalism, and fraud.

They are trying to charge me extra for my Pupillary distance ,which should have already been a part of my prescription. I was planning on buying some extra glasses online, but now I have to remeasure my own PD because of greed. I canceled my follow-up appointment. I strongly urge anybody who wants to go there to go somewhere else. This review will stay up until I get my PD

This place has basically tried to scam me twice. They did not do my dilation as part of my regular eye exam and told me I had to come back for it. I was assured that a dilation was part of my regular routine annual eye exam covered by insurance, but they billed it through my medical and I had to pay a specialist co-pay. When I talked to my insurance they told me that the tests they were doing were NOT routine. Then they made another follow up appt without my consent and told me that the routine exams involve SIX tests total that I have to keep coming in for. I don't know if this is a way for them to get my co-pay six times but nothing about this is routine or transparent. I have never before had to go into an eye doctor multiple times for a regular annual exam or use insurance outside my vision insurance.
