Helen K Wu, MD
Dr. Helen Wu is the Director of Refractive Surgery at New England Eye Center, affiliated with Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. She graduated from the Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed her ophthalmology residency at the Kellogg Eye Center at the University of Michigan. Dr. Wu originally came to Boston to complete fellowships in Cornea and External Disease and Ocular Immunology and Uveitis at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. She speaks English, Chinese, German, and Spanish.
Dr. Wu is an Assistant Professor at Tufts University School of Medicine. She currently sees patients at New England Eye Center in Boston, as well as in community practice locations in Brookline. She performs surgery at both Tufts Medical Center and Surgisite (SSB), a state of the art ambulatory eye surgery center located in Waltham, MA. Her LASIK and PRK refractive surgery procedures are performed at TLC, a specialty laser center in Waltham.
A pioneer in refractive surgery, Dr. Wu has been performing LASIK, PRK, ICLs, and premium lens cataract surgery since 1992. She is now offering cataract surgery with the Catalys TM Precision Laser System at Surgisite. Dr. Wu was one of the earliest adaptors to offer the Visian ICL and the topography-guided Contoura procedures in Massachusetts.
Dr. Wu continues to offer her patients the latest advancements in vision correction procedures to help eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. In addition, she continues to maintain a clinical practice as a Cornea specialist, specializing in complex problems of the cornea, ocular inflammation, and cataract surgery.
Dr. Wu also specializes in the treatment of dry eye for pre and post-refractive surgery patients and is now offering IPL (Intense Pulsed Light Therapy) for patients who may qualify for this treatment for their dry eye condition.
Dr. Wu’s passions include teaching medical students, residents, and fellows through Tufts University School of Medicine, and lecturing about innovations in Ophthalmology. Whether speaking to the local community about eye health or lecturing internationally to Ophthalmology professionals about her excellent surgical outcomes, Dr. Wu is dedicated to education and patient care.
She has served as Senior Associate Editor of the Journal of Refractive Surgery and on numerous committees for the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. She edited the textbook Refractive Surgery. As a visionary in vision correction surgery, Dr. Wu has participated in multiple clinical trials for PRK and LASIK and has trained hundreds of physicians nationwide.
When she is not tending to her patients, Dr. Wu spends time with her husband, teenage children, and yellow Labrador retriever. She tries to fit ballroom dancing into her busy schedule whenever possible.
