Helen L. Kornmann, MD, PhD – Biography
Dr. Helen Kornmann is a fellowship-trained glaucoma clinician and surgeon who is excited to be part of the Glaucoma Associates of Texas.
Dr. Kornmann completed her undergraduate training at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and graduated summa cum laude in English literature. She subsequently obtained her medical degree at Loma Linda University, during which she was awarded the National Institutes of Health Research Training Award. Dr. Kornmann continued to pursue her academic interests, and was selected for the Eye Specialty Training and Advanced Research Program at UCLA, where she earned her Ph.D. in vision neuroscience. She then completed her ophthalmology residency at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA. The unique research skills she obtained while pursuing her Ph.D. combined with her strong clinical interest in glaucoma led Dr. Kornmann to a glaucoma fellowship at the prestigious Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida.
After completing her fellowship, Dr. Kornmann was hired by Bascom Palmer Eye Institute to join the faculty. As an Assistant Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology, she was actively involved in the clinical and surgical training of ophthalmology residents and glaucoma fellows, as well as caring for complex glaucoma patients. During her tenure at Bascom Palmer, Dr. Kornmann also published several papers, served as a reviewer for the journal Ophthalmology, and has been a presenter and panel member at numerous national meetings, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Glaucoma Society.
On a personal note, Dr. Kornmann loves spending time with family, finding new outlets for creativity, experiencing new cultures and foods, and traveling. Although a native Southern Californian, she is happy to call Texas her new home!
