Dr. Barak Maguen, traumatizing experience, ethical misconduct
I visited this office on July 6, 2023. It was an annual eye exam. First I was seen by the technician and then entered the office of Dr. Barak Maguen. I notified him that I have had a left eye pain and redness. I informed him that on July 3, 2023 I was seen by a Kaiser Permanente family practice doctor who prescribed Maxitrol eye drops.
Once he heard this information, he started endless talk about an 'alleged' the Kaiser doctor wrongdoing and never stopped for my exam. His speculations lasted for more than 40 minutes.
He did not perform the eye exam but commenced by comparing the treatment to auto service. I asked him to conduct an annual eye exam, which he reluctantly started and then stopped again for general talks.
Then without verification he wanted to give the unverified prescription to me and end the visit. When I asked him to verify if the technician's prescription was correct he went literary mad and left the office telling me to leave. All eye doctors at this Institute verify prescriptions before give them to patients.
He sent in the assistant manager to make me leave.
I explained that the exam is not complete and I do not have the prescription.
Dr. Barak Maguen was standing by, yelling and threatening me to leave. He refused to give the new prescription that were ready but not verified.
He literary made a scandal continuing yelling and threatening.
I had to leave with no prescription and the incomplete annual eye exam.
He broke medical ethics and doctors' standards.
What he did for at least 40 min. was speculation about the Kaiser doctors and his inability to provide care.
Again I reminded him about the annual exam that I was there for, but he completely disregarded everything and became hysterical.
I have been seeing doctors at American Eye Institute since 1997 but never encountered such misconduct and hysteria. It was a terribly bad and traumatizing experience.
Bark Maguen should be reviewed and disciplined.

Dr. Barak Maguen is great! The intake/front desk process is a bit disjointed. They're friendly but could benefit from asking more probing questions about your needs.
Note: You need to let them know ahead of time if you want contact lenses. They won't ask you when scheduling your eye exam and you'll have to schedule another appointment and go back for your contact lens fitting if you don't schedule it all upfront (this is especially annoying due to the cost of parking, which they don't validate). Also, after they dilate your eyes, remember to ask for the disposable UV protection sunglasses. After they take your copay/payment, they don't ask if you need them and you may experience pain from the bright office lights and the outside sunlight.
For glasses/frames, get them anywhere else but here. A lady named Vicky is in charge of this process and she isn't the most welcoming. While waiting to get a price quote on lenses, I spent about 3mins listening to a discussion about Thai food before I was acknowledged. I brought my own frames and inquired about out of pocket pricing for lenses. The price quoted was extremely high (almost $400) for basic single vision lenses. When I expressed that the price was a bit much, she seemed annoyed that I even bothered to ask, as if me simply inquiring meant it was required to complete the process with her. I decided not to continue based on both the price and the subpar service and she seemed thrilled to get back to the Thai food discussion.
I went to Costco and visited their optical center to inquire about their cost for lenses. They charge an additional $25 if you bring in your own frames but even with that, the total cost for the same lenses (including UV protection and anti-reflective) was under $100 total. And Costco's service was much friendlier.
All that being said, go to the American Eye Institute for the doctors and nurses. But don't expect much from the surrounding areas in the office.

I recently had a comprehensive eye examination at this optometry clinic, and I was thoroughly impressed. From the moment I walked in, the staff was incredibly welcoming and accommodating. The optometrist was not only highly knowledgeable but also very patient, taking the time to explain every step of the examination. The quality of care was exceptional, with state-of-the-art equipment and a thorough assessment of my vision. I left with a better understanding of my eye health and a fantastic prescription. The value for the level of service received is outstanding. I couldn't be happier with my experience!

I recently had my child's first eye exam at L. A. Vision Optometry, and it was a fantastic experience. The optometrist was incredibly patient and gentle, making my child feel comfortable throughout the exam. The quality of care and attention to detail was outstanding, and I left with a clear understanding of my child's eye health. The pricing was also very reasonable, making it a great value for such a crucial service.

There is negligence and malpractice going on in this hospital. I had my eye completely removed in the hands of ophthalmologists who cared very little to help. I never got an apology or explanation what had happened.
This place use to be good. Decent, but not great. The appointments use to be 20 minutes. You would leave without any hassle. Now it’s 4 to 5 hours and the visits are 5 minutes meeting with the ophthalmologists.
I see the generic review they left on my post. What is calling Keck Medicine of USC going to do? How am I going to have a normal life after what the doctors did? You know, when I got kicked out of this hospital they sent me to a mental hospital torturing me in that facility and made me miss my cancer treatments. The director of USC personally called about being "let go" from the hospital. They could have fixed things and made things right. But instead, they washed their hands by avoiding responsibility. Now I am going to die from cancer because I am under no care from any doctors now. Before any of that happens I will expose every, ugly, thing they did to me.

The doctors and technologies are very good, however, not sure why the wait is so long. Min 2 hours per visit do not expect this to be a quick visit.

Fine doctors, nursing staff, and other tech and misc support staff. Clinic notes are quickly available. Appointments are occasionally difficult to get which tends to confirm how good Keck Medicine is.

I know Dr. Khanjian both personally and professionally. Personally, he is very attentive, welcoming, and makes others feel comfortable. Professionally he is determined, highly intelligent, and is devoted to ensure that his patients get the best treatment and services. He is the best at what he does. That’s who he is.
My family and I have been coming here since he first became an eye doc years ago, and we will always come here in the future because he is dependable and we can trust him. If you need to see an optometrist, it would be a medical mistake not to come here. California Eye Center runs on excellence and perfection.

Little gem in the heart of Van Nuys. I brought my 10 year old in for an eye exam & I’ll definitely be returning for myself. The office is very clean & very nice in general. The staff & Dr were so nice, knowledgeable and took their time with us. Offered water, coffee, very hospitable. They have a variety of different types of glasses with reasonable prices which I was happy to see. Overall, great experience & I’m very lucky to have found them.

This review is overdue but well deserved. December 2021 was my first visit to this office, and I was thoroughly impressed with the professionalism, and etiquette that both Dr. Harout and his staff displayed. Dr. Harout’s "bedside manner" is stellar! I appreciated how incredibly thorough he was and how patient and attentive he was to answer every single question and concern that I had. By far he has been the best eye doctor I have ever been to!
I would absolutely recommend California Eye Center. I applaud this office with the work that they are doing and in the manner that they do it in. I wish I could recall the assistant's name that greeted me and prepped me prior to the Dr. coming in. He was just as amazing and brought me in coffee as the Dr. finished with another patient. It's the simple/small things that make a world of a difference.
Every Review metters. See what people say about clinics.
