A recent study found that a diet that includes fish intake twice a week and daily intake of fruits and vegetables is associated with a reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration.
More than 4 thousand people were included in this study and it lasted more than 9 years.
The researchers found that among 10 food categories, only fish showed a statistically significant association with the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Eating fresh fruit twice a day, 200 grams of vegetables daily and fish twice a week significantly lowers the risk of AMD, the researchers say.
In general, the recommended lifestyle includes healthy food, smoking cessation and regular exercise. This applies not only to people with increased risk of AMD development, but also to everyone, says Dr. Koning-Backus, the author of the study.
