I am writing as the caregiver and spouse of a disabled veteran who was referred to the Shiley Eye Institute through VA Community Care to see Dr. Peter Savino. My husband suffers from traumatic brain injury (TBI) residuals, including severe, constant photophobia that affects his daily life 24/7. This referral was not casual—it was specifically made because we were told Dr. Savino has expertise in neuro-ophthalmology and conditions related to TBI. Everything had already been authorized through the VA, and we were hopeful that we were finally getting him in front of the right specialist. This morning, we received a call informing us that Dr. Savino declined to see him. When I asked for the reason, I was told that no explanation was provided. I cannot adequately express how disappointing and disheartening this was to hear. As a caregiver, I spend every day helping my husband manage the effects of his condition, and access to the right specialists is critical. To have an approved referral simply declined without any explanation leaves us not only without care, but without direction. I fully understand that physicians may have limitations or reasons for declining cases. However, a complete lack of communication—especially for a disabled veteran seeking specialized care—is extremely frustrating and discouraging. We had high expectations based on the reputation of this institution, which made this experience even more upsetting. At a minimum, patients deserve transparency and basic guidance—especially when they are navigating complex, life-altering conditions. Situations like this can delay care for patients who are already struggling to access specialized treatment.

I saw Dr. Park this morning as a new patient. She is compassionate and caring. The office staff are equally caring and so nice. I definitely recommend Kuhar Vision Care!

Lack of communication, I call and call and no response/ email nothing. Then finnaly I get a response when I CANCEL. Saying Thank you for letting them know.. really?!

Highly recommend! Super responsive, super attentive! About two weeks ago I scratched my cornea and was in a ton of pain! I called Dr. McAlear and he was able to see me right away. The injury happened on a Friday and I was nervous going into the weekend knowing at any point the pain could come back. Dr. McAlear was so fantastic! He gave me his cell phone to contact him with any issues and was super responsive! Unfortunately, I did have to go back in on a Saturday for another treatment but after that it got much better. For the next two days Dr. McAlear asked that I update him on how I was feeling even if it was great by texting him. Nowadays it's so hard to get an actual person on the line and even harder to reach your doctor. Dr. McAlear made it super easy, and I truly appreciate him!

The staff and doctors are very nice and helpful. The examinations are done with comfort in mind. The doctors explain every process and result in a simple manner. And the eye wear prices are reasonable, it was my 1st visit and I will remain a customer.
